In addition to being a technically savvy person, another very advantageous trait to have is the ability to multitask. The benefit of this trait applies to both academic and fast-paced work environments. Luckily, I had the chance to continue to refine and sharpen this skill over the past eight years of on-the-job training. Some of the most memorable moments were when I worked in the real estate and eCommerce industries. One particularly memorable incident, though, happened in eCommerce. So as a senior web development analyst, I was mainly in charge of ensuring that our promotions were correct for daily rotating deals and that the promotional texts from our vendors were accurate. Additionally, I was also in charge of generating new sales SKUs and generating sales progress reports for our general manager and the upper management. So, one day during our Black Friday thanksgiving sale event, two of my colleagues called out of work, and because we are short-handed, many of their product launch tasks were temporarily shifted to me. Thus, in order to accommodate this, I requested an additional third monitor from our IT team and an additional SAP ERP access for my station. So, long story short, because of this in-advanced preparation and multi-monitor setup, I was able to complete everyone’s task before I clocked out for work.
Responses to the professor or other students:
I love how you mentioned that you are doing homework with multiple tabs open. I, myself actually also utilize chrome tabs to help me manage the different assignment due dates. Basically, I will open all of the assignments that are approaching due dates and arrange them in chronological order and complete all of the assignments in a batch for a single class. Then I will move on to the other tab windows that have another set of assignments for my other classes. I do have to say, it does help me quite a lot.
That’s also how I used to manage the sales reports that I prepare for our upper management. Basically, I would have SAP ERP open on one monitor and an Excel spreadsheet on the other. When I had to export and copy a large number of data from SAP, it does intermittently freeze. In that case, I can open another Excel window and hoover over this SAP application interface, and have our backend portal on the other excel while SAP is processing the data batch. Basically, I was able to work on multiple reports all at once using this approach. It is super-efficient in a time-constrained environment. Although, I do have to say that the only shortfall to this is that you will need a multi-monitor capable workstation, and most of the time, the company will not be providing a very beasty machine to use.
