Berlioz’s personality was impulsive, antisocial, and emotional. First of all, the reason why I believe Berlioz was impulsive is that he has a tendency of acting without thinking. For example, in Ernest Legouve’s experience with Berlioz, he stated that Berlioz once shouted during an ongoing orchestra and said “…You don’t want two flutes there, you brutes! You want two piccolos, do you hear?…” He could have just politely mentioned it after the orchestra was over, so that way he doesn’t embarrass and create a scene for himself. Secondly, he was also likely an anti-social person. This type of personality was likely developed during his childhood years when he fell in love with Estelle and was rejected, but also according to Felix Mendelssohn’s experience with Berlioz. Felix stated that Berlioz “… [has] this desperation in the present of women…” This shows that he was likely a very antisocial person that lacks feminine love and care. When females are present, he gets excited and is desperately trying to attract their attention. Last but not least, also likely due to his antisocial personality, he is also a very emotional person. Ernest’s experience with Berlioz is a perfect example of that. Another example is Ferdinand Hiller’s experience with Berlioz, in which he said “…What dominated him, beyond reason, was the constant contemplation of himself, of his own passionate feelings…” This has likely actually benefited him in his compositions. Also given the overall culture of that period, that genuine passion and emotions have likely been reflected in his musical notes. In terms of the audience listening to it, they have likely felt that sincerity, and therefore, he is able to connect with his broader audience. Although, it is worth noting that his previous two personality and temperamental traits are also likely a downfall for him. Thanks to his irrational and sometimes unhinged behaviors, some of his audiences and fellow composers may have discriminated against him, despised him, or perhaps even refused to work with him.
