This has to be one of the most famous musical pieces ever made by us humans. Upon hearing the first note and the sharp pitch upwards, it immediately brings me to an extremely cheerful emotional state. As I listened further, a peaceful image of spring appeared in my mind. The imagery appeared as if I was taking a jog in a park full of trees on a bright sunny morning. While also accompanied by some gentle breeze of wind on my face. The birds are chirping away and the butterflies are surrounding me as I gently jog down a lane full of blooming flowers. I believe the primary reason that I felt this way was because the entire piece was played in major. Another reason is that the Violin is the center of the focus on this entire piece and it had a staccato and accented style of melodic pitches. I also believe that this piece has homophonic musical textures. Therefore, in this case, all other music layers such as the bassline and harmony act in support of this one melodic tune, rather than having multiple melodies that work to compete with each other, such as the polyphonic texture. Although, I do want to want to note that this is actually 1/4 of the entire four seasons piece, and the parts for the other seasons sound dramatically different than this spring part.
In addition, I do want to say that this piece is a very good example of that period of time. It really reflects how lavish or extravagant the upper-class people’s lifestyles were during that period of time while their follow countrymen suffered. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that this was also during the period of the French Revolution, in which Louis XVI and his queen Marie Antoinette were eventually beheaded. I remember reading about that part of the history and someone told me that the most pathetic part of that whole entire history was how lavish of a lifestyle Marie pursued. They told me about a story when the then-French government fell into debt and their economic situation worsened. In the midst of the mass starvation of her countrymen, Marie questioned her people and asked why are they starving? They shouldn’t be starving because they should eat cake instead if they can’t afford to buy or eat bread. It just goes to show you how out of touch they are during that time. So I am not quite surprised that it was deemed one of the worst periods of time, although, artistically, things took a huge leap forward. Thus, although it’s a happy music piece, the people during that period suffered immensely.
