The Time That I Was Terrified

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic created an enormous amount of distress and challenges for me over the past year and a half. When the virus first emerged in China, I was extremely terrified. I have never been so scared because it gives me flashbacks to the infamous 2004 SARS outbreak. Although the SARS epidemic was, for the most part, suppressed. The Chinese government was still heavily criticized for its transparency and early mitigation measures. Therefore, it was highly uncredible to rely on the sources from the Chinese media to help determine the severity of this inevitable pandemic. Sadly, during this same period, mainstream media in the U.S has also mostly downplayed its severity by comparing it to the seasonal flu. Therefore, I started reading up medical journals and articles on this virus to evaluate the risks myself. And when I saw how devastating and chaotic it is in Wuhan from the leaked pictures and videos on social media. That’s when I finally made up my mind and started to purchase personal protective equipment online for my family to embrace the impacts of this unavoidable global health catastrophe.
