Most of the things we are taking for granted nowadays existed long before our modern civilization had developed. For example, in the case of the Nacirema people, a lot of their tribal religious rituals seemed barbaric and uncivilized at first. However, if we look deeper, many of their tribal traditions are closely related to things that we do today. One of the good examples would be the Nacirema people’s obsession with one’s oral health. In their traditions, if a person does not adequately take care of their oral health, it is often seen as highly disrespectful, immoral, indecent, and sometimes sinister to their way of life. Likewise, if we were to relate this to our modern civilization, a person with bad breath could also be considered very inappropriate and disrespectful. If I had to spend a year with this tribe, as long as there’s something in common that I can relate to with our modern way of life, there shouldn’t be any issues to coexist. And perhaps, I would be able to teach them a thing or two about our modern civilization and way of life.
